about

"Hot and fresh out the kitchen..." - R. Kelly

While it is unclear whether talented and benevolent rapper R. Kelly penned these lyrics in reference to Mission South's sophomore EP "Migration Vol. 2," few words seem as apt to describe the innovative combination of sound that greets listeners on the band's latest release.

"Migration Vol. 2" sees Mission South broadening their horizons, blending complex poly-rhythmic sitar patters with more modern jazz and pop sensibilities, for a sound that is both cultured and charismatic. At points in the record, entire symphonies of flautists can be heard improvising sardonic melodies. These beautiful shrilling highs are counter balanced by the band's adoption of the last three movements of Brahm's symphony No. 3, which they recreate perfectly here in hand claps.
